About Split Second
For nearly 16 years, Jeff Garland served as a proud member of the NSW Police Force, risking his life to uphold the law and protect the community. His career, moulded on the streets of inner city Redfern and the infamous ‘Block’, was flooded with a multitude of violent and life-threatening incidents, arresting drug dealers, robbers and murderers, and wrestling armed, drug-affected and suicidal offenders.
Despite being spat on, kicked, punched, bitten, bullied and almost stabbed, shot, run-down, drowned, Jeff’s greatest challenge and legacy was his battle, and subsequent recovery from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). An insatiable love and appetite for the job and the ‘police family’ led him on a truly inspirational journey through the depths of depression, suicidal thoughts and medical discharge to being on the road to recovery.
Split Second – documented over 13 years – reveals Jeff’s real-life experiences and provides an invaluable insight into police-life and PTSD, proffering a unique perspective on how to cope, encouraging support and education for Police and their loved ones and promoting change within the policing culture. His vulnerability, courage and resilience regaled within his words will move and inspire anyone who dares to turn the page.
“Adrenaline was pumping through my veins, but I was terrified. I was a hostage trapped in the tray of that Ute.”
About Jeff Garland
Jeff Garland is a dedicated and decorated retired Senior Sergeant. And, more importantly, he is a father, a husband and a survivor whose passion to make a difference has led him on an incredible road to self-discovery. His story, determination and courage about how he overcame the depths of depression, thoughts of suicide and PTSD will inspire and move you.
Jeff had always dreamed about making a difference. To him there was no greater purpose in life. Whether it was organising large-scale fundraising events to raise money for charity, attempting Guinness World Records, serving on the NSW Police Force’s front-line, or being a public advocate for change Jeff knew from an early age what he wanted his legacy to be – hope!
“For as long as I can remember, I have always had the passion to help other people and make a difference in their lives. It makes me feel so alive and grateful…. One of the greatest lessons that I have learnt is to never give up hope. Tomorrow is another day! Things happen in our lives, but it’s not the event but the meaning that we give it that has the greatest affect – change the meaning; change your life.”
Jeff’s inspirational journey began as a child; whereas a twin he struggled with a sense of identity. His search for self and purpose guided him on a philanthropic path of discovery, understanding/consciousness and contribution. His endeavours to raise funds and awareness for those ‘less fortunate’ or ‘forgotten’ are testament to his character and commitment.
The resilience and fortitude that Jeff has displayed in serving as a Police officer, overcoming PTSD, depression and thoughts of suicide and writing about his experiences over the last 13 years reflects the congruency of his words with his actions. His message is simple and sincere: ‘We need to change the way we think in order to make a difference. Help A Mate Before It’s Too Late!!!’
“Walk alongside Jeff Garland as he takes you on a wild ride into the real world of policing. From the Redfern riots to wrestling with a suicidal male on a cliff face, Jeff eloquently describes the life of a front line cop during his career with the NSW Police Force. This story is told with brutal honesty and raw emotion and gradually peels away the layers of a once resilient young man. There is a strong message of survival in this book and one I could recommend for those who like to read real life drama.”
“Jeff’s story provides an insight to the private and at times isolating journey officer’s face while serving our community. As he talks openly and honestly about his physical and emotional experiences, you gain a rare and confronting account into how ‘the job’ affects his life as a front line cop, husband, father and man. This book is inspirational, provides a voice for those unable to speak and highlights the need for change in supporting our front line heroes….”
